Ukrainian Army Chief Mykhailo Drapaty Pushes Deeper Strikes, Reforms
Mykhailo Drapaty was appointed commander of Ukraine’s armed forces a week ago. In his first call with NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe General Alexus Grynkiewich, he outlined a strategy that calls for deeper, long‑ and medium‑range precision strikes far inside Russian territory and for an expansion of Patriot air‑defence missile systems to protect Ukrainian cities. Drapaty thanked U.S. President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth for the assistance provided.
He also urged structural changes within the Ukrainian army, including strengthening the army‑corps structure and granting greater operational autonomy to corps commanders. Emphasising asymmetric tactics and domestically developed technology, Drapaty said Ukraine must increase Russian casualties and undermine Moscow’s war economy, citing attacks on fuel refineries and other high‑value targets. Throughout, he highlighted Ukraine’s continued reliance on Western financial and military support to sustain its defence.
