Syzran Russian Oil Refinery Hit by Ukrainian Drone Attack, Halting Production
Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles struck the Rosneft‑owned Syzran oil refinery near the Volga River, igniting a fire in the main crude distillation unit (CDU‑5). The damage forced the plant to cease operations. A second key unit, CDU‑6, had already been out of service since a May 21 attack, leaving the complex operating at a fraction of its capacity.
The refinery can process up to 8.5 million tonnes of crude a year; in 2024 it handled about 4.3 million tonnes, producing roughly 1.5 million tonnes of diesel, 800 000 tonnes of gasoline and 700 000 tonnes of fuel oil. The latest strike further curtails Russian domestic fuel supplies and reduces exportable volumes, potentially tightening diesel and gasoline markets in Europe and raising prices. Rosneft has not commented on the incident, and the timeline for restoring full output remains unclear.
