Ukrainian drone strike ignites fire at Russia's Engels‑2 airbase
Ukrainian drones attacked the Engels‑2 military airfield in Russia's Saratov region on the night of 15‑16 July, setting parts of the base ablaze and causing explosions near a nearby residential block. The governor of Saratov region, Roman Busargin, said no casualties were reported: “No preliminary data on victims.” The strike also damaged civilian infrastructure in the town of Engels.
The Engels‑2 base houses Russia's long‑range strategic bombers, including Tu‑95 and Tu‑160 aircraft capable of carrying nuclear weapons. Russian air defence reported shooting down 375 Ukrainian drones across the country that night. Civil aviation was temporarily suspended, with the nearby international airport “Gagarin” closed for safety.
Separately, Ukrainian forces reported attacks on Russian tankers operating in the Black Sea and Azov Sea, part of a broader effort to disrupt Russian logistics.
