Ukrainian drones hit Russian oil refineries as Russia bombs Kyiv
Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles struck two major Russian oil refineries on the night of 8 August. Fires broke out at the Ilsky refinery in Krasnodar Krai and at the Syzran refinery in Samara region. The Ilsky attack injured five people, while the Syzran strike caused damage to storage tanks but no casualties were reported.
Russia’s air‑defence forces said they intercepted large numbers of Ukrainian drones, claiming 397 drones were shot down in one night and a total of 605 drones over several regions in subsequent operations. Russian forces also bombed Kyiv, killing at least three civilians, including a four‑year‑old child, and wounding several others. A separate Ukrainian drone strike set fire to a Wildberries logistics centre in Gekaterinburg.
The escalating exchanges affect energy supplies, civilian safety and the broader war effort on both sides of the conflict.
