Ukrainian drones raise battlefield death toll and strike Russian oil terminal

UN Development Programme advisor Paul Heslop says the massive deployment of drones has turned Ukraine’s battlefield into a far more lethal environment. He notes that while typical conflicts see about one death for every three injuries, the ratio in Ukraine has reversed to roughly three deaths for every four people affected. Drones continuously monitor large areas, guide artillery fire and deliver explosives, creating new explosive hazards that threaten civilians, agriculture and post‑war reconstruction, and could affect global grain supplies.

Recent Ukrainian drone operations also targeted a Russian oil‑loading terminal near Petrograd, where Russian officials said 67 enemy drones were shot down and a fire broke out at the facility. At the same time, Russian air strikes on the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy killed at least four people and injured 27, including attacks with guided bombs that damaged residential buildings.
