Overview
In early July 2026, Ukrainian drone deployments dramatically increased battlefield lethality, reversing the usual death‑to‑injury ratio and extending threats to civilians, agriculture and reconstruction. Ukrainian drones also struck a Russian oil‑loading terminal near Petrograd, while Russian air strikes hit Sumy, causing civilian deaths.
By late July, both sides intensified strikes well behind the front lines, leading to the highest civilian casualty count since 2022. A Russian missile and drone attack damaged the historic Kyiv‑Pechersk Lavra, targeting a civilian religious site. Ukrainian drones hit a food business in Pavlohrad, a vehicle in Belgorod and targets in Crimea, while Russian strikes killed a child in Voronezh and injured civilians in Sumy. The pattern shows an expanding scope of drone and missile use, increasingly affecting non‑military locations and raising civilian deaths on both sides.
