Ukrainian Hiker Rescued After Week Lost in Romania's Maramureș Mountains

A 30‑year‑old Ukrainian citizen was recovered after more than a week lost in the remote Maramureș Mountains of northern Romania. He had gone without food for about four days before a joint rescue operation located him.

The effort was coordinated by Salvamont Maramureș, the Poienile de Sub Munte sector of the Romanian Border Police, local SAJ forces and the IGAV crew of POA Jibou helicopter 343, which carried a rescue specialist, pilots Dragne Alexandru and Vasii Claudiu, medic Monika Dacz and assistant Dariana Feric. The helicopter spotted the hiker in an inaccessible area, air‑lifted him to the mountain base and then to a hospital for treatment.

Dan Benga, head of Salvamont Maramureș, said the operation "represents a new example of efficient collaboration among the structures involved in saving human lives."
