Ukrainian lawyer sentenced to four years for Conti ransomware role

Oleksii Oleksiyovych Lytvynenko, a 44-year-old Ukrainian national and former lawyer, has been sentenced to four years in a U.S. prison for conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Lytvynenko played a dual role in the Conti ransomware operation, acting as both an intruder and a developer. He specifically worked on creating a malware loader designed to execute malicious code on victim machines.

The Conti ransomware group, which disbanded in 2022, is estimated by the FBI to have extorted more than $150 million in ransom payments. Between 2020 and 2022, the group targeted networks across 47 U.S. states, 31 foreign countries, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico.

Investigators found evidence of stolen data from eight U.S. victims and four overseas organizations within Lytvynenko’s accounts. He has also been ordered to forfeit Bitcoin tied to his criminal activities. Lytvynenko, who previously resided in Cork, Ireland, had transitioned from a legal career in Ukraine to cybercrime before his activities were uncovered.
