Sentencing of Conti ransomware group member

Overview

Oleksii Oleksiyovych Lytvynenko, a 44-year-old Ukrainian national and former lawyer, has been sentenced to four years in a U.S. prison for his involvement with the Conti ransomware group. Lytvynenko pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud, admitting to joining the cybercrime group in September 2021.

Lytvynenko operated as both an intruder and a developer, specifically working on creating a malware loader to execute malicious code. Investigators found evidence of stolen data from eight U.S. victims and four overseas organizations within his accounts. He has also been ordered to forfeit Bitcoin linked to his criminal activities.

The Conti group, which disbanded in 2022 following disagreements related to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, is estimated to have attacked over 1,000 organizations across 32 countries and extorted more than $150 million. Lytvynenko was arrested in Ireland in July 2023 before being extradited to the United States.
