Ukrainian nationals detained in Romania for undeclared cash and police‑bribery attempt
On the night of Friday to Saturday, a joint team of border police and customs officers at the Vicovu de Sus crossing stopped a 34‑year‑old man holding dual Romanian‑Ukrainian citizenship. Driving a Ukrainian‑registered vehicle, he had €18,000 hidden in his personal luggage, which he could not justify or declare. The authorities seized the cash, imposed a fine of 3,000 lei and referred the matter for further investigation.
In a separate incident on 22 May, road police in Roman, Neamț County, halted a 41‑year‑old Ukrainian driver during a routine check on the DN2 highway. The driver attempted to bribe the officers with a €50 note to conceal irregularities in his tachograph records. The officers refused, reported the attempt to the Neamț County Anti‑Corruption Service, and a criminal case for bribery was opened by the local prosecutor’s office.
