Ukrainian officials condemn Lviv riots, caution over Poland‑Ukraine tensions

Mayor Andrij Sadowy of Lviv denounced the Wednesday night disturbances in the Sychów district as "shameful behavior" after a crowd overturned an army vehicle when the military detained a 30‑year‑old evading conscription. Police intervened, and city authorities said they would pursue legal action against those involved in the vandalism. Sadowy emphasized that the actions of a few do not reflect the city’s 58,000 residents serving on the front lines and warned that Russia seeks to use internal discord for propaganda.

Kyrylo Budanow, head of President Zelenskyy’s office, later warned that relations with Poland could deteriorate ahead of the July 11 commemoration of the Volyn massacre, describing a possible “serious crisis” in Polish‑Ukrainian ties. His remarks sparked a sharp rebuke from Polish Sejm Deputy Speaker Piotr Zgorzelski, who demanded Budanow “kneel in the honest field” and recalled the 1943 “Bloody Sunday” attacks on Polish villages. The Polish government spokesperson also noted rising tensions between the two neighbours.

Both incidents underscore growing domestic unrest in Ukraine and heightened diplomatic friction with Poland.
