Ukrainian woman arrested for intentional arson in Chania, Greece

On 26 June 2026, a 45‑year‑old Ukrainian citizen was arrested in Chania, Crete, after deliberately setting fire to dry vegetation near the Moni Agiou Georgiou site in the Charodia Mourni area. She piled personal belongings, ignited them with a naked flame, creating a fire risk near forested land.

Investigators from the Fire Service’s Arson Crimes Unit and local police located her vehicle, bearing Ukrainian plates, parked in a residential yard, and took her into custody. She admitted the act, and a case file was sent to the public prosecutor. The fire service reports that from 1 January to 27 June 2026 it issued 480 fines totaling €544,579.79 and made 126 arrests for arson, of which eight were intentional.
