Umar Khalid's Bail Plea Reviewed by Delhi High Court

The Delhi High Court issued a notice to the Delhi Police on activist Umar Khalid's fresh bail application in the case filed under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). A division bench comprising Justices Prathiba M Singh and Vikas Mahajan listed the matter for hearing on 27 August 2026, together with the bail plea of co‑accused Sharjeel Imam.

Khalid, arrested in September 2020, has filed his third bail request, also seeking interim bail pending a Supreme Court decision on the applicability of Article 21 to Section 43D(5) of the UAPA. A trial court on 4 July 2026 rejected his regular bail, stating it was bound by a Supreme Court order dated 5 January that required specific conditions before reconsideration. The Supreme Court later upheld that denial while granting bail to several other co‑accused.

Khalid is charged with alleged involvement in a larger conspiracy behind the February 2020 north‑east Delhi riots, which left 53 dead and more than 700 injured during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act and the National Register of Citizens. The Delhi Police’s Special Cell is investigating the case, with Additional Solicitor General S V Raju representing the police.
