Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam denied bail in Delhi riots case

A Delhi court rejected the regular bail petitions of Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam, accused in the 2020 Delhi riots case. The court kept its decision sealed after hearing extended arguments from both sides.

The prosecution, invoking the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), opposed bail, citing lack of substantive evidence and the seriousness of the charges. Defence counsel argued the absence of concrete proof, including any weapons or financial links, and pointed to the prolonged pre‑trial detention of the two men.

Earlier in the trial, several co‑accused received interim bail, prompting the defence to request similar relief. The court, however, upheld the earlier Supreme Court order restricting bail for the remaining accused, indicating that the case remains ongoing with no imminent resolution.
