Šumava National Park faces toxic chemical contamination crisis
Environmental Minister Igor Červený has announced a major ecological crisis in the Šumava National Park. In the former military area of Dobrá Voda, authorities discovered approximately 1,000 tons of contaminated soil and 200 barrels containing highly toxic chemicals, including mercury, arsenic, dioxins, furans, and chlorinated solvents.
These substances, remnants of the former Czechoslovak army, have been leaking into the soil for roughly three years, posing a significant risk of groundwater contamination. Officials warned that in the event of a fire, the chemicals could react to form a highly toxic gas similar to phosgene. The site has been secured by police to prevent public access.
Remediation efforts are scheduled to begin in late September and are expected to continue until June 2028, with an estimated cost of approximately 192 million CZK. While the contamination is severe, officials noted that the affected areas are located away from primary tourist routes, meaning park visitors should not face immediate restrictions.
