Umbria political landscape shifts amid civic alliances and local disputes

Political tensions are rising in the Umbria region of Italy, marked by internal fractures within right-wing coalitions and the emergence of new civic movements. In Gubbio, the Umbria Civica movement has accused Fratelli d'Italia of orchestrating a political maneuver to destabilize the local majority. The dispute follows the departure of four councilors from the Gubbio Civica list to form Progetto Città and subsequently join Civitas. Umbria Civica claims Civitas is not an independent civic group but rather a political current of Fratelli d'Italia designed to absorb administrators elected under different lists.

Simultaneously, a new regional entity called ‘Alleanza civica per l’Umbria’ has been launched to unite various local administrators and civic realities. Promoted by mayors such as Michele Toniaccini of Deruta and Vittorio Fiorucci of Gubbio, the network aims to create a collaborative space based on liberal culture, merit, and subsidiarity. The group intends to collect regional development proposals through a participatory process involving citizens and associations, positioning itself as a significant player ahead of the 2027 political and administrative elections.
