Umbria region allocates €3.7 million hydroelectric fees to 13 municipalities

The Umbria regional council approved the distribution of €3,697,000 in fees from large hydroelectric derivations for 2026 to 13 municipalities. The allocation follows population data as of 1 January 2026 and is divided into four strategic areas: €1.85 million for youth and sport programmes, €647 000 for tourism development, €600 000 for territorial planning and urbanism, and €600 000 for road infrastructure.

The largest share goes to the city of Terni, receiving €2,481,134.09, followed by Orvieto (€444,807.34) and Narni (€411,514.50). Smaller communes receive amounts ranging from €7,401.03 (Vallo di Nera) to €102,703.52 (Norcia).  Thomas De Luca, the regional assessor for the environment and energy, said the measure “guarantees a real and fair return of resources to territories that have contributed decisively to regional energy production” and described it as “a political choice to turn the hydroelectric fee into a sustainable development engine.”

Municipalities must submit eligible project proposals by 31 August 2026 for the funds to be released, after which a new, more flexible allocation method will apply.
