Umbria strengthens waste control with new Terni filter project and validates Viterbo landfill expansion

Regional environmental assessor Thomas De Luca clarified that the newly built slag‑ramp filtration system at the Arvedi AST steel plant in Terni will capture dust emissions that previously affected the Prisciano district. The enclosed treatment facility, part of a programme worth over €1 billion for local steel production, is intended to eliminate open‑air dispersion of industrial residues.

The Lazio administrative court confirmed the regional authority's decision to enlarge the Fornaci landfill near Viterbo, authorising the construction of a new basin (Vt4) to replace the exhausted Vt3 tank. The court rejected four objections lodged by the Viterbo municipality, affirming the need for continued waste‑handling capacity and regional waste‑management solidarity.

Both decisions aim to improve waste handling and reduce pollution in Umbria, with the Terni project focusing on industrial emissions and the Viterbo ruling ensuring the continuity of municipal waste disposal services.
