Melaka state election: Parties negotiate alliances and seat distributions

Political parties in Malaysia are navigating complex negotiations and strategic assessments ahead of the upcoming Melaka state election. PAS President Abdul Hadi Awang stated that the party is currently assessing UMNO’s strength in Melaka as it considers a potential alliance with Barisan Nasional (BN). He noted that PAS has employed different tactical approaches in previous elections, such as in Johor, depending on the strength of the participating parties.

In response to internal friction, PKR Melaka Chairman Adam Adli clarified that while UMNO Youth Chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh has expressed a personal preference for a BN-Perikatan Nasional (PN) alliance, negotiations between Pakatan Harapan (PH) and BN remain open. Official discussions regarding a PH-BN cooperation for the Melaka polls have yet to be formally scheduled.

Meanwhile, MCA President Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong cautioned that the party’s recent successes in Johor and Negeri Sembilan should serve as guidance rather than an absolute measure of performance in Melaka, citing differing regional issues and voter confidence. Additionally, political observers have raised concerns that current discussions among Malay-led parties appear focused more on seat distribution than on a cohesive long-term political agenda.
