Melaka state election seat negotiations

Overview

Barisan Nasional (BN) announced on 5 August 2026 that it would defend all 21 seats it currently holds in the Melaka State Legislative Assembly, refusing to cede any while remaining open to broader cooperation discussions.

Two days later, Perikatan Nasional (PN) said it would not rush talks with BN over seat allocation for the upcoming election, preferring to assess voter sentiment before deciding which constituencies to contest. BN reiterated its stance of retaining all 21 seats, and PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang emphasized the need for a consensus that safeguards the Malay-Islamic community.

By 7 August, BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi expressed openness to potential seat swaps with PN, provided discussions remain honest and do not reduce the total number of seats held by either coalition. Simultaneously, Pakatan Harapan (PH) entered discussions with BN regarding a potential pact covering both state assembly and parliamentary seats.

On 10 August, negotiations continued as BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi confirmed he has authorized Melaka BN chairman Ab Rauf Yusoh to conduct discussions with any coalition. Zahid noted that while seat allocation is a “challenging issue,” he believes it can be resolved through dialogue. Ab Rauf Yusoh clarified that these negotiations do not automatically result in a formal partnership, as outcomes depend on strategic factors and party strengths.

Regarding Perikatan Nasional, secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan clarified that upcoming talks between PN and BN would not involve Bersatu, noting that negotiations will be shaped by local factors such as the distribution of parliamentary and state seats.
