UN Afghan mission condemns Pakistani airstrikes that killed 36 civilians in eastern Afghanistan
The Afghan Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York denounced recent Pakistani airstrikes in the eastern Afghan provinces of Paktia, Paktika and Kunar. The strikes, carried out on the night of 28 June, reportedly killed 36 civilians, including women and children, and injured 163 others, while destroying three residential houses.
The mission called on Pakistan to halt all military actions inside Afghan territory immediately and to accept accountability for breaching international law and Afghanistan’s sovereignty. It also urged the UN and the broader international community to monitor the situation closely. Taliban spokesperson Hammadullah Fitrat confirmed the casualty figures, and the mission reiterated that the Taliban’s own repressive policies have already caused “heavy suffering” for the Afghan people. Human‑rights organisations, including the Norwegian Refugee Council and Displaced International, echoed the condemnation and appealed for strict adherence to international humanitarian law.
The mission stressed that civilian safety must remain the highest priority and that further displacement or humanitarian crises must be avoided.
