UN agencies warn of collapse due to severe funding shortages

United Nations agencies are facing severe funding shortages that threaten to collapse critical humanitarian and human rights protection systems. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk warned that budget cuts are causing staffing reductions and the cancellation of monitoring committee sessions, jeopardizing the global human rights treaty body mechanism.

Simultaneously, the UNHCR has cautioned that funding gaps are endangering the livelihoods of over 8.3 million refugees globally. Reductions in donor contributions are impacting essential services across Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, including primary healthcare, clean water, emergency shelter, and cash assistance. Experts warn that if support falls below a certain threshold, these protection systems may cease to function entirely, potentially driving displaced populations into extreme poverty and instability.
