UN and EU leaders clash with US over AI regulation risks

Global leaders and international organizations are divided over the regulation and risks of rapidly advancing artificial intelligence. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has issued warnings regarding the potential for an uncontrolled ‘race to the bottom’ in AI development, calling for international communication mechanisms and shared controls to prevent global catastrophe.

In Europe, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized a human-centric approach to AI, advocating for responsible use that creates value with lower energy consumption. She indicated plans to engage with leading AI laboratories to discuss supporting the industry while managing development speeds.

These calls for caution contrast sharply with the stance of former U.S. President Donald Trump, who has dismissed AI risks as a ‘hoax’ and a ‘malicious conspiracy’ designed to benefit China, arguing that existing U.S. regulations are sufficient.

The debate is further fueled by industry figures; Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon resigned in protest of current development paces, and tech executives including Dario Amodei, Sam Altman, and Elon Musk have expressed support for slowing the rate of AI advancement to ensure safety.
