UN and EU See Possible Progress on Cyprus Issue Amid Turkish Pipeline Plans

The United Nations and the European Union said there may be room for forward movement in the Cyprus dispute, according to sources cited by the Cyprus News Agency. They noted that Turkey’s current stance and recent messages are not supportive of progress.

Turkey issued a Navtex notice for seismic surveys linked to a proposed natural‑gas pipeline from its coasts to the occupied area. Although the Navtex does not cover Cyprus’s exclusive economic zone, officials said the activity raises concerns.

During visits to Cyprus, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Charles Mestre (António Costa) met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. The EU officials emphasized that any advancement in EU‑Turkey relations must be preceded by progress on the Cyprus issue, and they sought to separate Euro‑Turkey cooperation from the impasse in Cyprus.
