UN and Red Cross urge urgent rules on autonomous weapons

The United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross have issued a joint statement calling for urgent negotiations to establish legally binding rules for autonomous weapon systems. The organizations warned that the world is “dangerously close to crossing a moral red line” regarding the autonomous targeting of humans by machines.

While some fully autonomous systems, such as anti-missile technology on warships, are currently in use, the organizations expressed concern over the rapid development of AI-driven weapons. They noted that the gap between technological advancement and regulatory constraints is widening. Human rights advocates have raised concerns that these systems may be unpredictable, potentially failing to recognize injured or surrendering soldiers, which complicates accountability for war crimes.

The appeal comes ahead of meetings in Geneva, where negotiators aim to strengthen the Convention on Conventional Weapons. The UN and ICRC emphasized that decisive action is needed to implement prohibitions and restrictions before these technologies become more widespread in global conflicts.
