UN begins sale of Somalia peacekeeping assets amid funding uncertainty

The United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) has opened a public tender for licensed auctioneers to liquidate a wide range of mission property, including vehicles, heavy machinery, medical equipment, and modular housing. This commercial sale comes amid growing uncertainty regarding the future of UN logistics in the region.

The liquidation process follows a decision by the United States to end its financial support for UNSOS once the current mandate for the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) concludes at the end of 2026. As the US provides approximately one-quarter of the UNSOS budget, its move to withdraw funding and potentially block efforts to preserve the existing mechanism has led to contingency planning for a possible total shutdown of the office.

While asset disposal can be a routine part of restructuring or project completion, the timing aligns with a broader transition as the Somali Federal Government seeks to assume more responsibility for security and governance. However, officials warn that a rapid reduction in UN support could impact humanitarian assistance, development, and the logistical backbone that provides fuel and food to African Union peacekeepers fighting Al-Shabaab.
