UN Environment Programme launches AI-driven methane alert system
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) reports that only 13 % of large methane leaks identified by satellite have been addressed, highlighting a gap between detection and action. To close this gap, UNEP’s Methane Alert and Response System (MARS), developed with Bloomberg Philanthropies, uses high‑resolution satellite data to notify governments and energy companies of super‑emitters and to monitor repair efforts.
Artificial intelligence now processes the massive flow of satellite observations, allowing analysts to handle 12–15 times more data and to flag 80‑85 % of emissions later confirmed by experts. Since its full deployment in 2024, MARS has generated more than 40 mitigation actions, cutting an estimated 1.2 million tonnes of methane – a climate benefit comparable to removing the annual emissions of nearly 24 million gasoline cars. The system has examined over 1.3 million satellite observations, aiming to accelerate leak repairs and reduce short‑term global warming.
