UNEP methane alert system expansion

In late July 2026 the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) announced a major enlargement of its International Methane Emissions Observatory and the Methane Alert and Response System (MARS). Funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies, the upgrade adds high‑resolution satellite monitoring that can locate large methane leaks in near‑real time and sends alerts to the responsible governments and operators. UNEP highlighted that only about 13 % of identified super‑emitters had prompted investigations and set a target for governments and companies to respond to at least 80 % of alerts by 2030.

A few days later UNEP detailed the role of artificial intelligence in the expanded system. AI now processes the massive flow of satellite observations, allowing analysts to handle 12–15 times more data and to flag 80‑85 % of emissions later confirmed by experts. Since its full deployment in 2024, MARS has generated more than 40 mitigation actions, cutting an estimated 1.2 million tonnes of methane—equivalent to the annual emissions of nearly 24 million gasoline cars. The AI‑driven enhancements aim to close the gap between detection and repair, accelerating leak mitigation and reducing short‑term global warming.
