UN Envoy Holguin Anticipates July‑August 5+1 Cyprus Talks

UN Personal Representative Maria Angela Holguin said a 5+1 meeting on the Cyprus issue could take place in July or August, after a one‑hour discussion with President Tufan Erhürman and Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Hristodulidis. She noted preparations with UN Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres and emphasized a positive outlook, adding “Ne olacağını toplantıda göreceğiz” (“We will see what happens at the meeting”).

Holguin’s outreach also included meetings with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and Greek Foreign Minister Yorgos Gerapetritis, as well as talks with AKEL secretary‑general Stefanos Stefanu and DISI chair Annita Dimitriu. While Hristodulidis expressed optimism about a broader conference, Erhürman showed caution, requesting more detail on the meeting’s content. The discussions reflect ongoing divergent positions among Cyprus’s leaders as they prepare for a potential expanded conference.

Cypriot media reported that the talks are part of a wider effort, with the EU and neighboring states encouraged to support the negotiation process.
