UN envoy Holguin arrives in Cyprus for renewed talks on island division

UN Secretary‑General António Guterres’ personal envoy, Maria Angel Holguín, is visiting Cyprus after a four‑month absence. She will meet President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman separately on June 8 before travelling to Turkey and Greece for further consultations.

Guterres has pledged to help the parties reach an agreement before his term ends later this year, but the lack of progress – notably the inability to open a crossing point – makes a settlement unlikely before his departure. Christodoulides has pressed for an enlarged meeting of the guarantor powers, while Erhurman, who now supports a federal solution, argues such a meeting is premature without confidence‑building measures. The envoy’s visit is seen as preparation for possible talks in July, though expectations remain low.

The latest round of diplomatic activity follows a previous enlarged meeting in July that failed to produce concrete steps, leaving the Cyprus deadlock unresolved.
