Cyprus leaders call for cooperation amid UN envoy's peace push

UN Personal Envoy Maria Angela Holguin has called on Cyprus leaders to cooperate on confidence-building measures and negotiation methodologies, asserting that a comprehensive agreement remains possible. Holguin noted that progress has stalled over the last two years regarding issues such as mine clearance and the opening of new crossing points.

During the 6th Pyla Peace Festival, Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulidis and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman appeared together, a symbolic gesture in the UN buffer zone. Christodoulidis stated he has submitted written proposals to UN Secretary-General António Guterres covering negotiation methods, the substance of the problem, and confidence-building measures. He also claimed that the UN envoy is aware of which side rejected a recent compromise regarding crossing points.

In response, Tufan Erhürman stated he has not received a 19-item proposal document mentioned by Christodoulidis, either directly or through the UN. He emphasized that the process should focus on the UN Secretary-General’s suggestions rather than a competition of proposals. The two leaders are scheduled to meet again on Tuesday, October 20, at 11:00 AM to continue discussions.
