UN envoy Maria Angela Holguin to visit Cyprus in September
United Nations envoy Maria Angela Holguin is expected to visit Cyprus in early September to advance efforts regarding the Cyprus problem. This follows a meeting between President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman, where both sides agreed to meet once a week.
During the discussions, Erhürman expressed readiness to progress on specific confidence-building measures, including mine clearance, new crossing points, citizenship rights for children of mixed marriages, sports, irregular migration, and disaster management. However, he emphasized that political equality remains the core of the issue and cannot be traded for other matters.
Holguin has previously stated that implementing confidence-building measures is an ‘indispensable condition’ for an enlarged meeting involving the two communities and the guarantor powers: Greece, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. These measures are intended to serve as practical tools to test the viability of a future political order and build collaborative habits.
