UN Envoy Maria Angela Olgin calls for political will in Cyprus negotiations
Maria Angela Olgin, the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Cyprus, has expressed hope that an upcoming trilateral meeting on November 9 will motivate leaders to reach a compromise on previously discussed initiatives.
In an interview with the newspaper 'Alitheia', Olgin emphasized that practical cooperation, political will, and Cypriot ownership of the process are essential prerequisites for achieving a solution. While she welcomed recent direct dialogues between the two leaders, she noted that such meetings alone do not prove the political will necessary to change the current status quo.
Olgin urged both sides to implement confidence-building measures to demonstrate a genuine willingness to cooperate. She clarified that her role is to facilitate communication and help parties find common ground rather than participating directly in the negotiations, noting that her physical presence on the island is not required for bilateral meetings to be effective.
