UN experts urge Iran to halt executions and end use of death penalty
United Nations experts are calling on the Iranian government to immediately halt executions, accusing authorities of using the death penalty to silence political dissent. Experts noted that Iran currently maintains the highest rate of executions per capita globally.
While international attention often focuses on security-related cases, experts stated that the majority of executions in Iran are conducted for murder and drug-related offenses. The experts' review highlighted numerous instances of procedural injustice and severe human rights violations, including torture, forced confessions, and denial of access to legal counsel.
In response to these findings, UN specialists have urged Tehran to implement an immediate moratorium on executions, replace all death sentences with alternative punishments, and conduct thorough reviews of all cases to ensure defendants receive fair trials.
