UN experts urge Canada to protect Sikh activist Moninder Singh FAST-MOVING
Five independent United Nations special rapporteurs – Ben Saul, Gina Romero, Andrea Bolanos Vargas, George Katrougalos and Nazila Ghanea – sent a letter to the Canadian government on 3 June urging urgent safety measures for Moninder Singh, a Sikh activist and chair of the Sikh Federation Canada. Singh, a resident of Surrey, British Columbia, has received four police “duty to warn” notices since July 2022, citing credible and imminent threats to his life.
The experts asked for details of police investigations into the threats and highlighted that a similar warning was issued to Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was shot dead in June 2023. Former prime minister Justin Trudeau has previously linked the threats to Indian government agents, speaking on the matter in September 2023 and again at a news conference in October 2024 after the RCMP warned the public about Indian‑linked safety threats.
The UN panel’s call underscores ongoing concerns about the safety of Sikh community leaders in Canada amid alleged foreign interference.
