UN Human Rights Chief warns of violence and repression during European protests

United Nations Human Rights High Commissioner Volker Türk has called on governments in France, Belgium, Italy, Albania, and Portugal to halt the escalation of violence accompanying widespread protests across Europe. The demonstrations, driven by concerns over the cost of living, inequality, and public service degradation, have frequently resulted in clashes between protesters and law enforcement, as well as looting and property damage.

In France, protests initially focused on education funding have expanded to include rising prices. Recent unrest in Paris and Marseille led to over 2,400 arrests. In Belgium, student-led protests against austerity measures in Brussels and Liège resulted in nearly 200 arrests, including more than 25 minors. In Italy, demonstrations involving students and workers against the cost of living led to unrest in Milan, prompting the government to deploy 500 military personnel to maintain security.

In Portugal, police dismantled housing protest camps in Lisbon and Porto, resulting in 55 arrests. Meanwhile, in Albania, students have protested against corruption and the state of universities. Türk has urged states to protect the right to peaceful assembly and called for independent investigations into allegations of excessive police force, particularly regarding the treatment of minors.
