Civil unrest and protests across Europe
Overview
Widespread protests have emerged across several European nations, driven by concerns regarding the cost of living, inequality, austerity measures, and corruption. Demonstrations have involved students and workers in countries including France, Belgium, Italy, Albania, Portugal, and Spain.
The unrest has frequently led to clashes between protesters and law enforcement, resulting in numerous arrests and property damage. In response, some governments have increased security measures, such as Italy deploying military personnel and France planning massive security deployments including soldiers. In Italy, a security decree was approved to relax rules regarding the detention of minors.
International human rights bodies have responded to the escalation. The United Nations Human Rights High Commissioner, Volker Türk, called on governments to halt the escalation of violence and urged independent investigations into allegations of excessive police force. Similarly, the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Michael O’Flaherty, urged member states to prioritize de-escalation and respect the right to peaceful assembly, warning that the deprivation of liberty must not be used to intimidate protesters.
