UN Human Rights Commissioner Volker Türk says Israeli actions in Lebanon may constitute war crimes

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said that Israeli military actions in southern Lebanon have caused extensive destruction and heavy civilian casualties. His office documented attacks on villages, homes, schools, health centres and water‑electricity networks, noting that some of these acts could breach international humanitarian law and amount to war crimes. An independent UN fact‑finding mission has been operating since 2 March to gather evidence. Türk urged accountability, protection of civilians and respect for Lebanon’s sovereignty. The Lebanese army added that ongoing Israeli strikes hinder its deployment in the south under existing cease‑fire agreements.
