United Nations: 22 nations call for global AI oversight
Twenty-two countries have adopted a joint declaration at the United Nations General Assembly calling for artificial intelligence to remain under human guidance, supervision, and control. The initiative proposes the establishment of an international oversight mechanism to manage the risks associated with advanced AI models.
The declaration advocates for transparent safety protocols, including mandatory testing before the release of new models and independent assessments by regulators with sufficient access to identify potential risks. While acknowledging AI's potential to advance science and economies, the signatories warn that rapid development poses significant security threats if not properly managed.
Notably, the United States and China, leaders in AI development, have not signed the declaration. UN Secretary-General António Guterres has also called for global coordination, warning that the world cannot afford a “race to the bottom” regarding AI safety and that isolated, voluntary pauses in development will be insufficient to address the borderless risks of the technology.
