UN mission finds grounds for US war crimes in Iran
An independent UN fact-finding mission has reported that there are reasonable grounds to believe the United States committed war crimes during military strikes in Iran in February. The report, intended for the UN Human Rights Council, specifically highlights an attack on the Shajareh Tayyebeh Primary School in Minab and a strike on a sports complex in the Fars province.
Regarding the school in Minab, the mission concluded the strike was an indiscriminate attack that caused civilian deaths and infrastructure damage. Iranian officials report that over 150 people were killed, including approximately 120 schoolchildren. Investigators stated the US relied on intelligence regarding a senior Iranian military commander but failed to adequately verify the information, acting with a level of recklessness that exceeded mere negligence.
The report also notes the potential use of novel US ammunition, such as tungsten shot, during these operations.
Separately, the UN mission found that Iranian authorities committed crimes against humanity during their response to nationwide anti-government protests that began in late December. The findings include reports of security forces using live ammunition and targeting demonstrators with air rifles.
