Lebanon seeks to extend UNIFIL peacekeeping mandate

Lebanese officials are calling for the continued presence of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) as its current mandate approaches an end. UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix is visiting Beirut to discuss the mission's future, noting that while the UN Security Council voted in August 2025 to terminate the mandate by December 31, 2026, negotiations regarding a successor or extension must begin soon.

Lebanese leadership, including Speaker Nabih Berri and President Joseph Aoun, maintains a unified stance in supporting UNIFIL to ensure the implementation of Resolution 1701. Officials warn that a withdrawal could create a dangerous security vacuum in southern Lebanon, especially given the ongoing tensions and Israeli military presence in the region. Lebanon has proposed a six-month extension to allow for a transitional period.

While several options for a potential successor force are being considered, no final decision has been made regarding what might replace UNIFIL. The mission, which has operated in the region for nearly 50 years, plays a critical role in monitoring the Blue Line, defusing tensions between Israeli and Lebanese forces, and facilitating humanitarian aid.
