UN political mission in Somalia concludes after three decades
The United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNATMIS) is set to end this Saturday, marking the conclusion of more than thirty years of successive UN missions aimed at rebuilding the nation following its civil war.
The Somali government has characterized the closure as a significant milestone in the country’s ability to manage its own affairs independently. This follows a 2024 request from the Somali administration for the mission's termination, which the UN Security Council supported through a two-year transition period designed to transfer responsibilities to Somali institutions and other UN bodies.
However, analysts and opposition figures have expressed concerns regarding the timing of the withdrawal. The mission ends amidst ongoing disputes over the president’s right to remain in office, continued combat by al-Qaida-linked militants, and worsening humanitarian needs due to drought. While the political mission concludes, African Union troops will continue to support Somali forces against militants, and UN humanitarian organizations will remain in the country to address aid requirements.
