Maria Angela Holguin sets three conditions for new Cyprus 5+1 talks

Maria Angela Holguin, the Personal Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Cyprus, has outlined three essential prerequisites for convening a new informal extended meeting in the 5+1 format to address the Cyprus issue.

The three conditions identified by Holguin are: the continuous and direct engagement of the two leaders, the determination of potential Confidence Building Measures (CBMs), and progress regarding the essence and methodology of the solution. She emphasized that the future of peace efforts rests with the leaders, noting that "the biggest obstacles to progress are fear of the other and a lack of political will among all actors."

Holguin further stated that the United Nations is compiling a document based on UN archives to record all past convergences, including those up to Crans-Montana. She cautioned that the UN would not convene a new 5+1 meeting if there is a risk of repeating previous failures, as such an outcome could damage the peace process.
