UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres seeks updated Cyprus peace framework during Cyprus visit

UN Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres arrived in Cyprus to pursue an updated solution framework he submitted at the Montreux meeting. He will meet President Nicos Christodoulides and the Turkish Cypriot leader, aiming to secure Ankara’s approval for the framework and pave the way for a third informal conference on the island.

UN envoy Maria Anhela Olkin will also hold talks with Cypriot officials, discussing Turkish positions and recent EU‑Turkey trade negotiations, including issues such as SAFE participation, sanction removal and customs union upgrades. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis was briefed on the Turkish stance during a separate meeting in Athens, emphasizing the heightened importance of Greece‑Cyprus coordination. A joint meeting of Guterres with both Cypriot leaders is scheduled, followed by a press conference.
