UN Secretary‑General Guterres visits Cyprus to revive peace talks

United Nations Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres arrived in Cyprus in late July 2026, the first UN Secretary‑General visit to the island in 16 years. He met separately with Republic of Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish‑Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman, and later held a three‑way discussion in the UN Good‑will Mission office. Senior UN officials Rosemary DiCarlo, Jean‑Pierre Lacroix, Khassim Diagne and others accompanied him.

Guterres visited the Missing Persons Committee Anthropology Laboratory, laid a wreath at the UN peace‑keeping monument near the Ledra Palace Hotel and held talks with civil‑society representatives. He reiterated strong political commitment to the peace process and pledged "everything I can to support" both Greek and Turkish Cypriots, while noting the role of the guarantor states – Greece, Turkey and the United Kingdom.

Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides said there is no other option than a settlement, expressed cautious optimism after the working dinner, and hopes that Wednesday’s talks will yield concrete announcements. Turkish‑Cypriot leader Erhürman echoed support for a federated solution. CTP General Secretary Mehmet Kale Kişi stressed that the visit should lead to concrete steps toward a federation. The next day’s joint meeting is expected to focus on tangible outcomes.
