United Nations Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres will travel to Cyprus from July 27 to 29, the first visit by a UN chief to the island since 2010. The trip, announced by UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, is part of his Good Offices mission and aims to advance the stalled peace process.

During the visit Guterres is scheduled to meet the leaders of both the Greek‑Cypriot and Turkish‑Cypriot communities, as well as other relevant parties, to discuss ways to restart negotiations on the Cyprus problem. Cypriot government officials describe the visit as “very significant” and “not ceremonial”, stressing that it seeks to create conditions for an informal expanded conference and to pressure Turkey to adopt a constructive approach.

Local politicians, including MP Fikri Toros, have highlighted the strategic importance of resolving the Cyprus issue for regional security, energy supply and broader Euro‑Mediterranean stability. An EU Commission envoy is also expected to arrive shortly after Guterres, underscoring the international attention on the island’s division.
