Antonio Guterres rules out 3+1 or 5+1 Cyprus meetings at UN General Assembly

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has announced that no 3+1 or 5+1 format meetings regarding the Cyprus issue will take place during the upcoming UN General Assembly. Guterres emphasized that while the UN remains committed to progress, new negotiations must be prepared in a way that creates realistic expectations for tangible results to avoid repeating past mistakes.

Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Hristodulidis is scheduled to meet with Guterres on September 24 in New York. Prior to this, Hristodulidis is expected to meet with the UN Personal Representative for Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin, on September 22. The Greek Cypriot administration maintains the view that the UN Secretary-General is awaiting a “green light” from Ankara before moving forward with significant steps on the Cyprus problem.

Meanwhile, expectations for the resumption of formal negotiations remain low, according to AKEL parliamentary group spokesperson Yorgos Lukaidis.
