UN Secretary‑General António Guterres visits Cyprus for peace talks

UN Secretary‑General António Guterres is scheduled to arrive in Cyprus on 27 July for a three‑day visit aimed at advancing a new federative solution to the island’s division. He will be accompanied by his personal representative María Ángela Holguín and senior UN officials Jean‑Pierre Lacroix and Rosemary DiCarlo. During the visit Guterres will meet Greek‑Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish‑Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman, lay a wreath at the UN monument in the Ledra Palace, and visit the Missing Persons Committee.

The talks will explore a draft solution described as a “constructive uncertainty” approach, with the prospect of announcing an expanded “5+1” conference involving the two Cypriot communities and international partners. Parallel to the diplomatic activity, mass mobilisations have been organised on both sides of the Green Line to endorse a bi‑communal, bi‑zonal federation, while AKEL’s Stefanos Stefánou called for clear positions from the Greek‑Cypriot side to preserve the achievements reached since 2017. The visit is seen as a symbolic step toward equal engagement with both communities and a push to revive stalled negotiations.
