UN Secretary‑General Guterres to visit Cyprus for two‑day talks

U.N. Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres is scheduled to travel to Cyprus from 27 July to 29 July for a two‑day visit, the first by a U.N. chief to the island in 16 years. He will be accompanied by a senior U.N. delegation, including Rosemary DiCarlo and Jean‑Pierre Lacroix, and will meet Turkish Cypriot President Tufan Erhürman, Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Hristodulidis, as well as civil‑society representatives and the Missing Persons Committee. The visit is intended to prevent a further stall in the peace process, revive confidence‑building measures and explore a possible “5+1” format involving Turkey, Greece, the United Kingdom, the European Union and the United Nations.

Cypriot authorities have welcomed the trip. The Turkish Cypriot side described it as a “significant opportunity” to restart negotiations, while the Greek‑Cypriot municipality of Ammochostos and other Greek‑Cypriot officials called it an “essential step” toward a fair settlement. Political parties such as the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) and the Turkish‑Cypriot leadership stressed that the mission could give momentum to a comprehensive federal solution and improve regional stability in the Eastern Mediterranean.
