UN Secretary-General warns of deepening crisis in Cyprus' dead zone

The UN Secretary‑General’s latest report on UNFICYP says the situation in Cyprus’ buffer zone remains “deeply concerning,” especially around the village of Pyla. He notes a rise in military activity along the cease‑fire line, new fortifications, and the placement of weapons in civilian buildings, which blur the line between military and civilian infrastructure.

During the reporting period UNFICYP recorded 166 military violations – 46 by the Greek‑Cypriot National Guard and 120 by Turkish forces – and 33 incidents of unauthorized armed hunting that endangered peacekeepers. Surveillance increases include additional cameras, sensors and drones. The UN calls for direct military communication mechanisms, respect for the UN‑demarcated buffer zone, and an end to unauthorized construction. The report also condemns threats against UN personnel and urges the Republic of Cyprus to investigate armed hunters who have put UN staff at risk.

The Secretary‑General highlighted ongoing work on the missing‑persons investigations, with 1,718 bodies recovered and 1,076 identified out of 2,002 missing since 2006. Agricultural activity inside the zone continues to fuel tensions. He urges both communities to use UNFICYP mediation to revive dialogue and de‑escalate the situation.
